The Differences Between the Astrological Air Signs: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius

While Gemini, Libra and Aquarius are all air signs they are different in terms of their qualities, their ruling planet, and the houses, or areas of life, they rule.

Gemini is a mutable air sign, ruled by Mercury and it’s house is the 3rd.

The 3rd house is associated with communication and transportation, imagination, formative ideas and early learning, neighbors, acquaintances, siblings and the people we treat like our brothers and sisters.

Libra is a cardinal sign, ruled by Venus and it’s house is the 7th.

The 7th house is associated with one-on-one relationships, especially romantic relationships and marriage. How we treat others and people we choose to be with can affect how we view ourselves and how others see us.

Aquarius is a fixed sign, ruled by Uranus and it’s house is the 11th.

The 11th house is associated with friends. groups and organizations. Creativity is often brought forward to the public through stage, gallery or audience in the 11th. Society as a whole is represented by the 11th house. Sciences, technology, banking, social service or non-profit organizations that enable people to advance are also 11th house.

All three air signs can be great communicators but Gemini has an innate ability to chat people up. Curiosity, imagination and a brotherly/sisterly acceptance of other people along with the tendency for boredom, restlessness and fickleness are the main traits of Gemini. Gemini often is drawn to a job where they can use their hands, such as hairdresser, piano teacher, deaf interpreter. They need perpetual variety on the job so some do well in sales, especially if it allows them to travel. The Mercury and 3rd house association also inclines many Gemini to teaching or writing careers, or jobs in the travel industry. Their mutable nature enables them to hold onto more than one thing at a time, be it thoughts, jobs, or relationships.

Libra loves people, too, but it is more of an inner need to be accepted. They learn about themselves through their relationships and are rarely single for long. Libra has strong managerial or boss energy. Libra values relationships and works at the strategy, social etiquette and diplomacy of cultivating relationships in order to advance. Perfection seeking, charm, and an appreciation of beauty are Libra traits. I have found that the cardinal energy of Libra makes them good at telling other people what to do, but they can procrastinate over making decisions for themselves. They fear the option they do not choose will be the one that is better. Many Libra people have artistic or musical talent due to the Venus influence. Debate and strategy talent also makes them good at law.

Aquarius has a reputation for being friendly and humanitarian while simultaneously being detached, cold, and independent. Often, their work may have an effect on society or a large group of people, although the need to express their ideas often comes before an intention to help humanity . They can have an “I’m OK, you’re OK” attitude toward relationship. As long as they can be true to themselves and express themselves freely, all is well. If Aquarius feels restricted or controlled they will rebel. Their fixed nature can make them stubborn, especially if they know they are right — and usually they have the knowledge and intelligence to BE right. The Uranus and 11th house influence may give an interest in the future, sciences and technology, the Internet, social organizations, entrepreneurship, or unusual careers.

The three air signs are often comfortable with each other because they have quick minds and the houses that their signs rule are social houses, but their focus and goals may differ. No matter what your own sun sign is, your natal chart has the energy of all three air signs somewhere in your chart. Any planets you may have in houses 3, 7 and 11 will have the influence of Gemini, Libra and Aquarius energy, coloring the expression of the planet in the house. In the houses of your chart where you have Gemini, Libra and Aquarius energy, you may view the concerns of the house through the filter of the air sign you find there. If you have several planets in one of the houses 3, 7, or 11, or if any of them “belong” to that house, such as Mercury in the 3rd house, you may express the energy of those planets in very Gemini, Libra or Aquarius ways, even if those planets are not in the air element.
